Great Scottish breakfast tea turned mediocreSep 24, 2011
By Scott Burgess What my wife and I always enjoy about Scottish breakfast tea is its powerful malty kickstart to the morning. Brodies Scottish breakfast tea was once the best of class--bracing but easily smoothed, notably malty, premium Assam tea. That was before this company put profits ahead of quality. The new 2011 Brodies is marginally better than cheap Lipton's tea. The new tea is still strong, but gone is the maltiness of quality Assam tea. This new version is an astringent tea with no maltiness requiring double sugar and cream to achieve palatability.
We knew recent boxes of Brodies tagged tea bags carried this mediocre junk. We decided to revisit the cannisters before passing judgement. Never again! As that great Scot and collector of proverbs James Kelly noted, "He that deceives me once, shame fall him; if he deceives me twice, shame fall me!"
Harrisons and Crosfield offers a milder Scottish breakfast--it provides a slight maltiness, though it is a weakly-flavored, smoother tea than Brodies is or was. Stash English breakfast tea is similar, though a tad more flavorful. We've tried several other brands to no avail. If you know of a quality, malty Scottish breakfast tea, please let us know. Meantime, if you seek the same qualities we do, we recommend you try these alternatives or look elsewhere for your tea.

By T. Church I have tried them all; Tazo, Twinnings, et al. We Yanks simply don't know how to make a great black tea. Brodies damn sure does. It's fuller, more robust and just plain meaner. Every morning begins with Brodie's Scottish Breakfast Tea. It's great iced in the summer, as well.
Good strong teaJan 29, 2012
By F. Campbell I like Brodies breakfast tea. It is the closest I have found to a strong breakfast tea since a wonderful visit to Scotland some years ago.l I like the container as it keeps the tea fresh and it does not take much room in my cabinet. Also nice is that there are no staples on the bags and I can put the bag in the cup of water in the microwave if I want to.
Delicious!Dec 12, 2011
By azcutie I love this tea and so does the rest of my family including my 2.5 year old niece! I drink two cups of tea a day and I don't waste my time on colored water (aka Lipton). This tea is smooth, strong, and delicious. If American restaurants served this tea, Americans would drink more tea.
I brewed up a big pot of this for Thanksgiving. My niece who has always loved tea wanted a sip of her father's tea. After she started to drink, murmurs of 'Mmmm' were heard from her little mouth and her father had to go get another mug.
Very Strongly Flavored TeaJul 19, 2011

(Or should I have said flavoured?) I drink tea all day every day and since I do not add milk I find this tea is quite a bit too strong for my taste. I have tried many different teas through the years and my current favorite morning tea is Taylors of Harrogate Scottish Breakfast tea, maybe that will provide a helpful comparison. ADDED Later: I just bumped this review from 3 to 4 stars because I have used almost all 100 teabags and may order more. I use them for iced tea or to add flavor to a pot using 1 Brodies to 2 PG Tips. Makes for a very nice blended flavor.
